The story behind Afërditë
First attested in the late 19th century. Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek Ἀφροδίτη (Aphrodítē), intentionally altered by folk etymology as afër ditës (“near the day”). As it was and still is popularly believed a native Albanian formation, it became a common given name, especially during the puristic naming restrictions of the communist era.
